Given his intention to link beauty and morality – beauty is a symbol of morality for Kant – his suspicion of music follows from the aims of the third Critique. As we shall see in a moment, Kant insists that in art it is the other way round: nature gives the law to us (via the genius), so that ‘beautiful art is an art insofar as it at the same time appears to be nature’ (CJ B p. 179, A p. 177).
